“Approaching the Natural: A Health Manifesto by Sid Garza-Hillman is a powerful pocket-sized guide to optimal health and wellness. Behind its beautifully simple design is a wealth of knowledge and practical advice about how to live in order to achieve maximum health and happiness, in all aspects of life. This is certainly not a fad or a diet book. It is even more than just a nutrition or lifestyle book. Rather, it is an empowering philosophy of health and happiness for the whole body and mind.”

This is how easy it is! On a break, pop your shoe off and touch bare earth, or simply hold on to a tree for a minute. Sound weird?
Before I dive into the book, let’s talk Sid Garza-Hillman. Who is he?

Sid is a certified nutritionist, weight management coach and duh – an author! In addition to helping people all over the country, he is the Staff Nutritionist and Program Director at the Mendocino Center for Living Well at the Stanford Inn Eco-Resort.

After reading his book, Sid is so much more than those titles. He is a master in the health world, and truly wants to help others live a long, healthy and happy life.” ~ Allyson Koerner

I often get questions about nutrition from athletes. First, I am an athlete–a long distance runner. Currently I am training for the Avenue of the Giants 1/2 marathon on May 5 (join me, anyone?).

I explain it this way…Athletes, just like anyone, need optimal nutrition for the amount of work their bodies are performing. There is not a huge difference in nutritional needs of athletes vs. non-athletes, but rather a difference in caloric needs. In other words, I need to consume more calories than someone who is stagnant because I burn more calories than they do. BUT, the quality of the calories (i.e. see “Heavy Box Foods” in my book) is essential for both of us. Likewise, my bud, Rich Roll, who is training way heavier than I am needs even more calories, but again, still needs the good stuff, dig?

I kind of want to take a solo vacation there to decompress. Maybe next year during my hubby’s busy season… when it’s easier to leave the baby with someone else. I always have vacation to burn off at this time of year. I liked how the author is credited right on the cover: Nutritionist/Author/Philosopher/Parent. Isn’t it cool that “parent” is so important it’s right there in his credentials?

“A few weeks ago Sid Garza-Hillman, a Certified Nutrition and Weight Management Coach and the Programs Director at the Mendocino Center for Living Well at the Stanford Inn Eco-Resort in Northern California asked if I was interested in reviewing his book, Approaching the Natural: A Health Manifesto. My first thought was, “Heck Yeah!” which was quickly followed with an overwhelming sense of responsibility to accurately portray the book to my readers. While I recommend books often I’ve never given a formal review.

I really enjoyed reading this book and definitely recommend it. First I want to tell you my impressions of the author. Sid, yes we are on a first name basis now (he may not know that though), makes you feel like you have known him for years and probably got in trouble in math class together in high school. Well, maybe not but he seems familiar, like an old friend and explains confusing concepts with easy to understand imagery and humor that will keep you engaged. His passion for life, his family, health and the earth are infectious.

In some ways I felt like he let me, “off the hook” and in other ways I felt extremely challenged and empowered to rise to the occasion and get moving. There is much more to your health than just the food you eat or the amount of exercise you fit into your day. He doesn’t give you a magic formula to follow for success; he simply encourages you to approach the natural and explains how to do that in every area of your life. The book discusses nutrition but it is so much more than a “health” book; it is more of a “this is how you were designed to live” book.” ~ Holly at My Plant-Based Family

“On the Rich Roll podcast, Rich recently had this really fascinating guest named Sid Garza-Hillman. He is the nutrition and wellness program director at the Mendocino Center for Living Well at the Stanford Inn Eco-Resort and has a pretty interesting way of approaching healthful living. After hearing the podcast, I contacted Sid and read his health manifesto Approaching the Natural. His book, is more of a pocket-pistol, a small guide and reminder about how humans should try to approach living. Perhaps what strikes me most about Sid is his complete sincerity when trying to teach people about his method as well as his desire to make living as simple as possible- while he promotes a plant-based diet, he argues we shouldn’t stress about nutrients or vitamins, there are no charts or tables about how much of X we should be consuming or how many tablespoons of Y we need everyday. Instead, he suggest we simple eat healthy plant foods until we are full and should fill our days with art, nature, and other things we see value in. In short, Sid promotes moving back towards the way we would live in nature, hence his title, Approaching the Natural. The result is a fun, and very easy but also engaging read that will help get you up and moving (literally) down the road to better health.” ~ Anthony Zacchino
